Don attended Ben Davis High School, Indianapolis, and thereafter on at the Herron School of Art from 1964 to 1966. He joined the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts from 1966 to 1970, and thereafter finished his studies at the Yale School of Art where he acquired his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA), and studied with David von Schlegell.
